In this course, we explore what constitutes Colonialism from the point of view of the colonizer and the point of view of the colonized. As Prof. Mugugu grew up in Zimbabwe, we explore the narratives used and the impact on societies experienced as an example representative of the global impact of imperialism through colonialism and neo-colonialism.
First Half of Semister
In the first half of the semester we briefly explore the last 5 centuries of colonialism and neo-colonialism. We then focus specifically on the southern African continent and how it was impacted and remains impacted today.
Second Half of Semester
In the second half of the semester we are looking at the societal and legal changes brought about by colonization both for the colonizer and for the colonized. We are using the example of Zimbabwe and are studying its governmental structure and legal system brought about by or ‘inherited’ from colonizers, we examine remaining local cultures, and investigate the neo-colonization via consumer goods, technology, and intellectual property.
